Technology varies as well, including print head design. Direct thermal technology uses coated paper activated by heat from the printer head to form an image. Impact printers are not temperature sensitive and use ink ribbons to print with. Ink Jet printers can be used to customize receipts since they can print in two colors. Some POS printers offer multiple functions such as check endorsement, MICR font reading, receipt printing, and slip printing. Some offer portability, running on rechargeable batteries and connected by wireless technology or connecting directly to PDA type of equipment.
