Barcode printers create barcodes, graphics and other text for routing labels, UPC labels, IDs, and tags. They come in desktop, wireless, or portable models and use different kinds of print technology. Thermal transfer printers and direct thermal printers both use heat to generate images on paper, though the process and materials used differ. Direct thermal print technology prints on heat-sensitive paper and does not require a print ribbon but the labels themselves are prone to degradation over time or in heat, such as in a kitchen. Labels produced by thermal transfer printers are more stable over time and in heat, but do require the use of expendable ribbons.
